- Authors
Haworth, Brenda G.
- Abstract
Highly literate Quakers started schools soon after reaching Guilford County, North Carolina, in the late 18th century, and they started Sabbath schools for working children about 1820. Until 1832, parents paid tuition; thereafter the Springfield Monthly Meeting ran a school. After North Carolina Friends suffered through the Civil War, Indiana Quakers Joseph Moore and Allen Jay organized schools and normal schools supported by Baltimore Friends. Public education had taken over by 1915. The essay concludes with reminiscences of former pupils.
