- Abstract
The article discusses the literary presence of the Orient in the "Divine Comedy" by 13th century Italian author Dante Alighieri and its influence on modern philosophies of history. The author explores the depiction of the East and Islamic culture in Dante's work in light of the views on Orientalism of Palestinian author Edward Said. He also discusses the views of early 20th century Spanish Arabist Miguel Asín Palacios concerning the literary presence of Islamic culture in the "Divine Comedy."
