- Abstract
This article presents a comprehensive survey of the illustrations and drawings in Polish weeklies of the second half of the 19th century, i.e. Ognisko Domowe (1883-1888), Strzecha (1868-1873), Świat (1888-1892 and 1893-1895) and Włościanin (1869-1879). The methodology of this study is based on Wiktor Frantz's model of analysis of the pictorial content of daily newspapers, adapted to the layout and conventions of the illustrated weeklies. It also draws on Erwin Panofsky's iconographiciconological analyses, some elements of Roman Ingarden's theory of the picture and Heinrich Wölfflin's reflections on style in art in order to compare and assess the artistic quality of these illustrated weeklies.
