- Abstract
This article focuses on implementing a metadata taxonomy or controlled vocabulary in a company. Implementing a scalable controlled vocabulary in a firm where search and retrieval is a value-added service requires a huge increase in subject matter expertise to support the installation. Such an effort requires a core-controlled vocabulary, a customization strategy, an application to manage a controlled vocabulary into a asset management workflow, and some amount of professional guidance. The terms most companies use to define products, services, and events all form a core set of vocabulary terms. An application is necessary to manage the controlled vocabulary or taxonomy into the search and repository workflow. Taxonomy is a type of controlled vocabulary that brings structure to navigation and search systems. Some form of a metadata strategy, a controlled vocabulary and a controlled vocabulary management application are required to have a solution to a searchable database. One example of such an application is the Factiva Synaptica Vocabulary and Metadata Management System. Some of the companies that develop applications for managing taxonomies are: Factiva, Data Harmony, and Verity Inc. INSET: Metadata Terms..
