- Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the paternalistic leadership perceptions of health professionals regarding their managers and to present whether the perception levels differ according to personal and demographic characteristics. Convenience sampling method has been used and the questionnaires were distributed to 310 medical and administrative staff working at a university hospital in Ankara and 267 questionnaires were returned. The highest score means of the participants were given to moral leadership (4,44 ± 1,47) and to managerially authoritarian paternalistic leadership (4,35 ± 1,25). The lowest score was given to behaviorally authoritarian leadership (3,17 ± 1,25). It has been found that there is a statistically significant difference between benevolent leadership sub dimension scores and gender of the participants (t=2,553; p<0,05). Moral leadership dimension scores have not showed statistically significant difference. A statistically significant difference has been found between behaviorally authoritarian leadership sub dimension scores and age (t=2,371; p<0,05), duties (t=2,624; p<0,05) and whether having a managerial position (t=-2,302; p<0,05). A statistically difference has been found between managerially authoritarian leadership sub dimension scores and age (t=2,635; p<0,05) and whether having a managerial position (t=-2,843; p<0,05). According to the participants of the study; females find their managers more paternalistic then male staff, health professionals at the age of 36 and younger find their managers more paternalistic then professionals over the age of 37, medical staff find their managers more paternalistic then administrative staff, staff not having a managerial position find their managers more paternalistic then staff having a managerial position. On the other hand analysis show that there is no significant difference between paternalistic leadership perceptions means of the participants and marital status, level of education, total years of work experience, leadership education.
