- Abstract
This article explores the different terms used for "motley" or "multicolored" in the Balkan languages. The term for motley in Macedonian is derived from the root "4ara," which means pattern. This root is also found in other Balkan Slavic languages, Albanian, and Romanian. The article delves into the various meanings and uses of these terms in different languages and dialects. It also discusses the concept of "variegation" in the Balkan languages, particularly in relation to the color and pattern of plants and animals. The author highlights the connection between variegation and brightness, as well as its use in sympathetic magic rituals and its association with the color symbolism of the cardinal points. Overall, the article emphasizes the diverse and nuanced meanings of "variegated" in the Balkan languages.
