The author reflects on the importance of treating Somali pirates in accordance to the international humanitarian law (IHL) as that of Osama Bin Laden, founder of al-Qaeda. Topics discussed include importance of freedom of the seas in applying IHL to pirates, role of international law in treating pirates as civilian criminals instead of military enemies, and the role of IHL in treating pirates and resolving the Somali piracy.
