- Abstract
The article examines the way in which Great Britain responded to the 1821 Eastern crisis, which was characterized by the Greek war for independence and subsequent heightened tension between the Ottoman Empire and Russia. Focus is given to the work of British ambassador to the Sublime Porte of the Ottoman Empire Percy Clinton Sydney Smythe, Lord Strangford. Other topics discussed include the Ottoman's execution of Ecumenical Patriarch Grigorios V, Russian expansionism, and Strangford's own documents describing the diplomatic crisis.
