- Abstract
Introduction: Several studies have reported the association that exists between advanced age and complications during pregnancy, however, it is still a controversial issue. The objective of the present analysis was to determine the association between maternal age and gestational complications. Methodology: an observational, analytical and crosssectional study was carried out in the department of obstetrics of the Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, Cuenca-Ecuador, in which 729 patients with more than 32 weeks of gestation were studied. They were interrogated and a clinical history review took place. Results: 53.6% (n=391) belonged to the group of those under 30 years old and 46.4% (n=338) over 30 years old. In regards to their background 62.3% (n=454) came from an urban area. When evaluating their level of instruction, the highest proportion was located in the high school category. When studying the different associated factors according to the age group, it was observed that women in the group older than 30 years were associated with the presence of hypertension in pregnancy X²=36.340 (p<0.001), preeclampsia X² = 24.216 (p<0.001), performance of caesarean section X² = 22,686 (p<0.001), premature rupture of membranes X²=7.315 (p=0.007), postpartum hemorrhage X²=7.248 (p=0.007), cephalopelvic disproportion X²=6.858 (p=0.009), preterm birth X²=19.663 (p<0.001) and fetal death X²=7,763 (p=0.005). Conclusions: it was reported that there is an association between women over 30 years old and the presence of different gestational complications.
