- Abstract
Membership categorization analysis (MCA) enables the assessment of service needs that takes place in hierarchical institutions. In the everyday life of multi-professional working, this assessment may involve tensions, despite the official criteria. I used the MCA method for analyzing the interviews of members of a hospital's multi-professional team and a patient. In this case study, X-ray surfaced as a strong criterion defining the service needs. In the social order of the hospital institution, professionals capable of interpreting the X-ray possessed the most significant amount of the power of categorization. For the social worker, the situation was problematic, because she did not have the same kind of cultural resources for justifying her categorizations as the rest of the professionals. Also, the patient's conclusions on his/her further treatment differed from those expressed by the other interviewees. Methodologically, the membership categorization analysis proved to be a suitable tool for analyzing the opinions on the service needs expressed by the professionals and the patient, and for making the social order of the institution visible. In addition, the results produced by using this method are significant for developing the practices of social work.
