- Abstract
The work of Manolo Cuervo (Isla Cristina, 1955), painter and graphic designer based in Seville, stands out as a reference for several generations of designers, while drastically renewing the Sevillian visual scene of the eighties and nineties. Linked to painting since its inception, due to the effervescent Sevillian cultural scene of the late seventies, he began as a graphic designer and became a clearly differentiated and unique figure of the production of design in Andalusia. Posterist and above all, creator of images, it is from the end of the century that he takes up painting as an expressive medium, where the transfers between this and the design are constant, and between graphic resources and artistic practice. His themes arise from the iconography of the media, such as cinema, music (jazz and rock), theater, audiovisual media and advertising, to form a visual landscape where juxtaposition, mixing and decontextualization generate new meanings. For Manolo, design has been an expressive medium where he has put into practice his plastic findings, while his painting has collected the wide iconic repertoire that has shaped the contemporary poster.
