- Abstract
The authors made a short introduction and a review of the cases of Leptospirosis diagnosed in an Infectious Diseases Unit from a Central Hospital of the Central Region of Portugal, between January 1999 and July 2007. Epidemiologicol features, clinical manifestations, laboratoriatfindings and outcome were analysed retrospectively. There were identified 97 cases, 49 men and 48 women, with an average age of 517 years (17-82yr). There was a larger number of cases diagnosed between April and June (36.1%) with a peak in January (137%). In 687% of the cases was identified contact with animals and/or contaminated soil or water; in the remaining 31.3%, there were no records of epidemiological data, but the majority of the studied population lived in rural settings. The most common clinical manifestations were fever (93.8%) and myalgia (67.0%) followed by jaundice (40.2%). Gastrointestinal complaints were frequent such as nausea, vomiting (39%) and diarrhea (7.0%). Other manifestations included respiratory symptoms (15.5%), conjunctival suffusion (12,4%) and aseptic meningitis (6.2%). Analytically, thrombocytopenia and alterations of liver and kidney functions were frequent. The mortality rate was 2.1%.
