- Abstract
The article discusses environmental activism and debates surrounding wilderness preservation and land use in the Kootenay Region of British Columbia, particularly in the area of the Purcell Mountains, focusing on the period 1969 to 1974. It examines issues surrounding outdoor recreation and comments on concerns over dams and logging. The author explores the reconstruction of the Earl Grey Trail, efforts to protect Hamill Creek, and a campaign to halt the construction of a Fry Creek Canyon logging road. The involvement of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in environmental initiatives and the founding of the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy are also considered.
