- Abstract
An introduction is presented on the importance of insects (particularly dung beetles), and the origin and importance of two major limitations for the studies on diversity: the Linnaean and Wallacean shortfalls. Afterwards, the most recent progress in the taxonomic and geographic knowledge of the genera Onthophagus Latreille, 1802 and Phanaeus MacLeay, 1819 are synthesized; and some unpublished ideas on the current lack of knowledge on the taxonomy and distribution of the genera are presented as a reference for future studies.
