- Abstract
The objective of this phenomenological investigation was to document the experience of music therapists practising in mental health with adults in Quebec. Unfortunately, the number of music therapists who primarily work in this area is limited. Little is known about their work experience, approach, inspiration, interests, challenges, or the underlying thinking behind their practice. The models of psychosocial rehabilitation, recovery, and client-centred programs would benefit from being more extensively known. In fact, materials written in French that share the experiences and benefits derived both by practising music therapists and persons with mental health problems are virtually nonexistent. Consequently, the scarcity of music therapy services in mental health in Quebec denies this creative and innovative approach to adults who use community and hospital services. The results of interviews, reflections, recommendations, and research ideas are presented here. It is hoped that that this work will help to foster the use of music therapy practices in mental health.
