- Abstract
Avian mycobacteriosis (AM) is an infectious, debilitating and zoonotic disease, caused by Mycobacterium avium complex and Mycobacterium genavense. AM affects mainly domestic and wild birds. It can be fatal in immunosuppred animals. Granulomatous lesions with intrahistiocitic acid fast positive rods may be present in multiple tissues. This report describes the gross and histopathological findings from a parrot (Amazona aestiva) with history of apathy, emaciation and death. Grossly there was a 4,0 cm diameter yellowish mass in the coelomic cavity. Microscopically, the mass was composed of dense sheets epithelioid macrophages containing myriads of acid-fast bacilli. Mycobacterium genavense was diagnosed by PCR and gene sequencing.
