- Title
Dangers of the Theatrical-Dramaturgical Complex: A Call to Artists to Run Faster and Jump Higher on Their Own Two Feet.
- Authors
Ferguson, Alex Lazaridis
- Abstract
This manifesto is an attack on the role of dramaturgs in Canadian theatre and dance by Alex Lazaridis Ferguson (a theatre artist, scholar, journalist, and dramaturg). The rising power of the dramaturg, a role that in many cases is becoming one of gatekeeper between artist and audience, is questioned. Who does the dramaturg owe allegiance to-the artist or the presenting institution? The artist's increasing reliance on the dramaturg in rehearsal is also questioned. Does this reliance represent a lack of know-how on the part of the artist? When does the dramaturg become a co-artist, and is she acknowledged as such?
