- Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects approximately 72,000 to 98,000 individuals in the United States (Payne et al., 2020). Bruno and colleagues (2001) and John (2010) both note an increased incidence of urinary tract infections (UTI) among women with sickle cell anemia (SCA). This case study explores a 32-year-old woman with SCA, referred to urology for recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs). SCA is associated with both rUTI and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB). The importance of following guidelines is discussed to promote use of evidence-based practice.
