- Abstract
This article discusses the influence of circadian rhythms on cardiac physiology and disease. The circadian clock, which generates oscillations in gene and protein expression with a period of approximately 24 hours, regulates various physiological processes including cardiovascular function. Disruptions in circadian rhythms can lead to cardiovascular disorders such as myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, and heart failure. Aging is also associated with alterations in circadian rhythms, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Non-pharmacological interventions such as physical exercise, meal timing, and light therapy, as well as pharmacological interventions like chronotherapy, can help promote circadian resynchronization and improve patient outcomes. Advancements in omics technology and data analytics may contribute to the development of personalized chronotherapy for individuals at risk of cardiovascular diseases. Understanding the interplay between circadian rhythms and cardiovascular health offers potential strategies for promoting heart health and healthy aging.
