No Ordinary Love Story.
- Authors
Mendelsohn, Daniel
- Abstract
This essay is an excerpted and adapted form of the article, "No Ordinary Love Story," which was published in "The New York Review of Books" in February 2006, and focuses on the motion picture, "Brokeback Mountain." The film was promoted in the "Wall Street Journal" and the "Los Angeles Times" as a love story that just happened to involve two gay men. The argument is that the movie is a tragedy about closeted men, mixed orientation marriage, erotic self-repression, and homophobia. The visual and literary styles used in "Brokeback Mountain" are described.
