- Title
Southern Italy: Puglia gets a gay president.
- Authors
De Stefano, George
- Abstract
The article reports the election of an openly-gay politician in Puglia, one of the largest southern territories in Italy. Nicola "Nichi" Vendola, a gay activist and the newly-elected regional president, campaigned as an outspoken communist, a Catholic, and a "figlio di mamma". Vendola, who has a philosophical bent and published a book of poems "Before the Battle," believes the ruling class lacks rapport with the people. The Rifondazione Communista, co-founded by Vendola, supports minority rights and those affected by economic privatization in Italy. Nichi Vendola's victory appears to be a rejection of Premier Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italy party and his conservative government.
