- Abstract
The French version of the Decameron by Antoine Le Maçon (1545) is a milestone for the circulation of Boccaccio's work in France. This article aims to analyze its complex preface, which is made up of some texts, written both in French and in Italian. Starting from some bibliographical elements, we may suppose that the preface has been deeply modified, seeking to create a well-structured defense of the French language by some cross references within the texts. The cultural rivalry to Italy, the key role of monarchy in the advancement of French literature, the protestation of the "précellence" of French are some of the elements deployed; this reasoning recalls recurring themes and tòpoi of the contemporary linguistic debate, yet organized in an original way.
