An essay which explores how Hernan Diaz interrupted the expectations from a U.S. Western genre in his novel "In the Distance," while retaining the elements of the Western, is presented. Topics covered include how Diaz employed worlding to remake the Western genre in the context of globalization, disruption of the apparatus of the Western through the local/global journey of Håkan Söderström, the novel's protagonist and alienation of Håkan in the U.S.
