- Abstract
This article from Columbia: The Magazine of Northwest History discusses the life and activism of David Sohappy, a Wanapum treaty rights activist and spiritual leader among the River People of the mid-Columbia River. The River People, including the Yakama, Warm Springs, Umatilla, and Nez Perce tribes, reside on their homelands and follow unwritten laws handed down from ancestors. Sohappy and other Yakama Nation fishers were involved in a historic ruling in 1969, known as United States vs. Oregon, which affirmed their rights to fish along the Columbia River. The article also highlights the unfair treatment of Sohappy and his son during a federal sting operation in 1982, as well as their successful fight against eviction notices in 1984. Sohappy's activism and wisdom continue to inspire Indigenous people today.
