- Title
Refugee status determination: three challenges.
- Authors
Jones, Martin
- Abstract
The article discusses refugee status determination (RSD), focusing on the need for greater standardization. It is said that acceptance rates can vary widely, rejection rates are high, and factors unrelated to an individual's case can still affect its outcome. Legal aid to refugees is said to be extremely important, particularly given the transnational nature of RSD. It is noted that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is responsible both for developing standardized RSD protocols and for applying them.
