Colonizing Caster Semenya: Gender Transformation and the Makeover Genre.
- Authors

- Abstract
In 2009, You magazine, a popular South African periodical, “made over” 19-year-old track star Caster Semenya. Semenya is intersex: having biological characteristics of both male and female sexes. Her ambiguous location on the gender binary made her ripe for a makeover. In this article, I explore the relationship between Semenya's makeover and the core elements of the makeover genre. I examine how Semenya's makeover confronts the instability of sexuality and gender by rhetorically tugging her into a socially acceptable gender role. I conclude by exploring how communication scholarship can increase our understanding of identity, power, and the makeover genre.
