The article assesses the similarities and differences between the theory of public choice in light of economist Anthony de Jasay's book "The State." Topics discussed include the adoption of a servant concept of the state by the public choice theory, the book's support for the dominator concept of the state, the standard economic theory of public goods and social contract, and reasons for not abolishing the state.
