- Title
THEATER AND VOICE.
- Authors
Shelton, Marie-Denise
- Abstract
The article looks at the concept of Caribbean theater. Playwrights Simone Schwarz-Bart and Ina Césaire use the stage to present a space that is centered to a woman from which they explore the social, psychological and mythic dimensions of Caribbean existence. The use of the radio-casette as a theatrical device signifies the ultimate challenges of human alienation and despair for it implies the struggle for communication and human integration. Schwarz-Bart's "Ton Beau Capitaine" does not exemplify physical female presence onstage but instead its focus is on the male character.
