- Title
The Universal Transformation Matrix: Revealing the Relationships Among Different Graphical Projection Methods.

- Abstract
This article discusses the relationships among the different graphical projection techniques used by engineers and architects. These relationships are examined in the context of the transformation matrices that are employed to generate such projections on the computer. The report shows that the transformations that produce parallel (isometric and orthographic) and perspective projections can be derived as special cases of a transformation matrix that produces a three-point perspective view. For this reason, the latter transformation matrix is referred to here as the "universal transformation matrix." A better understanding of the different projection techniques, and the relationships among them, emerges from the recognition that all parallel and perspective transformations may be written as special cases of a single, general transformation matrix.
