- Abstract
This article focuses writer A. J. Bliss's excellently organized metrical system for English poetry. Bliss's excellently organized metrical system for English poetry sorts the half lines of Beowulf into as many as forty-nine broad metrical types. Nearly all the half-lines fit into his metrical system; a few, however, remain unclassified and are labelled as 'remainders', even though they are, as far as one can tell, neither syntactically nor semantically corrupt. Bliss points out that these half-lines are somewhat related to the hypermetric Maxims and 111a.
