- Title
THE INCEST THEME IN HAMLET.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the incest theme in William Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Hamlet's references to incest and incestuous sheets could hardly have been intended as a comment on Queen of Great Britain Elizabeth's legitimacy. The incest theme was a prominent feature of Shakespeare's sources for the play. The incest theme had been part of the Hamlet legend long before Elizabeth was born. Moreover, although the Table of Kindred and Affinity originally prohibited a woman from marrying her husband's brother, the Table was not part of the Prayer Book in Shakespeare's day.
