- Abstract
At the end of the 19th century, the propagation of missionary Protestantism from the United States to Brazil was effected through a migratory movement of evangelization, with the intention of establishing churches and schools. This missionary Protestantism, North-American in nature, is marked by liberal, individualistic and progressive ideologies, considered one of the most effective vehicles to bring "modernity" to the Brazilian territory. In this sense, the investigative itinerary will be guided by the following question: can this historical moment gain new contours from the rereading of decolonial thought? The aim will be to analyze the documentation about the beginning of the protestant movement and its dynamics, presented by Boanerges Ribeiro, Gedeon Alencar and Antônio Gouveia Mendonça, in order to identify possible narratives of coloniality. The methodology to be used will be bibliographic and documental research. When investigating mission Protestantism in Brazil in the 19th century and the reaffirmations of colonialism, one realizes that it is necessary to deepen the concepts of coloniality of being, knowledge, and power, taking as theoretical basis the thinkers: Anibal Quijano, Walter Mignolo, and Boaventura de Souza Santos. It is emphasized that decolonial thinking is an invitation to operate under another logic.
