- Abstract
During the past 60 years (1960-2020) human population growth, forestry, agricultural changes and infrastructure development have set a background to changes in human perceptions and attitudes towards birds. There has been a decline in traditional belief systems, traditional hunting methods and use of birds as traditional cues for community agriculture. There has been a rise in awareness of birds as an economic force, in the edible birds' nest industry, ecotourism, environmental impact assessments, and as fit subjects for research. The songbird trade and poaching for hornbill ivory have emerged as two major conservation issues. A consequence of all these changes has been an increase in career opportunities for Borneo ornithologists.
