- Title
La esencia en Gilson según Lawrence Dewan: estudio crítico.
- Authors
ALEJANDRO SERRA-PÉREZ, MANUEL
- Abstract
Thomas Aquinas' philosophy of being is partly indebted to Aristotelian ontology. Étienne Gilson, renowned for his studies on the Thomasian esse, speaks of a level of substance in Aquinas. However, his original conception of esse as the act of the being led the French medievalist to highlight the double composition that integrates the being under the primacy of esse. On the other hand, Lawrence Dewan, from a more Aristotelian Thomism, criticised his teacher for conceiving essence as something negative. In our research we will discuss this dispute in order to clarify which of the two authors is closer to Thomistic teaching.
