- Abstract
β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of leucine. Studies have found that dietary supplementation of HMB for sows during gestation and lactation has a positive effect in muscle fiber development and growth of piglets before and after birth, which improves growth performance and meat quality of pigs at market. At the same time, the colostrum fat and immune globulin content have been added by feeding HMB to sows during the perinatal stage, which increases the survival rate of piglets. In addition, feeding HMB to piglets during post weaning also could improve the growth performance and reduce the weaning stress. There are some possible mechanisms for dietary HMB supplementation to improve production performance of sows or piglets as following, including promoting the myogenesis and the type conversion of muscle fiber, and enhancing the synthesis of skeletal muscle protein, and inhibiting the protein decomposition pathway under weanling stress for piglets.
