- Abstract
Introduction. Neonatal mortality is a basic indicator to express the development and quality of neonatal attention. It necessary to know and identify the neonatal abnormality indexes in a region to start preventive measures applicable to each community. The main objective of this study was to know the morbi-mortality in a regional neonatal attention center from the western region. Material and Methods. This is a retrospective transversal study to analyze the medical records of infants less than 28 days of age in the neonatal intensive, intermediate and external care units at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde from January 2012 to August 2015. The following variables were studied: origin, diagnosis at admission, cause of death and mortality probability with admission diagnosis. Data storage and analysis was done using Excel. Results. From a total of 4316 patients, 602 died (13.9%). The main diagnoseses at admission were preterm neonate 19.3% (n=832), transient tachypnea of the newborn 8.6 (n=372) and respiratory distress syndrome 7.3% (n=313). Death causes were: septic shock 36% (n=217), respiratory insufficiency 19% (n=115) and cardiogenic shock 16% (n=95). Prematurity is the main cause of mortality with 20%, followed by heart anomalies 14% and non-specified congenital malformations11%. Conclusion. The main contributors to the decrease in mortality are: trained staff, greater number of equipped neonatal units, regionalization of critical newborn attention, and neonatal care transport care. A greater investment in resources and infrastructure is needed to attain a greater coverage in neonatal attention.
