- Title
The Text and Metre of Sapph. fr. 108 V.
- Authors
Meister, Felix J.
- Abstract
The article analyzes the text and metre of Greek poet Sappho's surviving fragment 108 which is reconstructed from a paraphrase in rhetorician Himerius' wedding speech for his pupil Severus. Topics include the central difficulty of the metrical interpretation of the fragment, the prosodic differences between Sappho's poetry and that of the epic tradition, and the reasons for the difficulty of applying an argument about heroic setting or dactylic movement to the fragment.
