- Abstract
The article aims to present Pierre Rosanvallon's thought. His accurate diagnoses of the state of contemporary democracy are based on thorough analyses of historical development tendencies. This approach enables him to explain in a new way not only the state in which liberal democracy is but also prospects for change. The article shows that his ideas are not only hermetic but can perfectly fit the contemporary mainstream debate about the crisis of the representation model and can enrich it to a large extent. The article especially emphasises the area of deliberations on the phenomenon of weakening the strength of political parties' representation and legitimacy because this is where aresearcher's approach to the nature of political changes is focused like in a lens. The presentation of the richness of the author's thought required making reference to a few of his works. In each of them, he convincingly shows that a type of new authoritarianism is not the only or even the most probable prospect for the change of the system. It is equally possible that anew, more open and social, form of democracy will emerge from them. The article finishes with questions about boundary conditions, opportunities and barriers to the implementation of such a scenario, and indication of the most visible limitations of the model.
