- Abstract
This article analyzes aspects of social relations in contemporary Brazil, represented in O som ao redor (2013), Aquarius (2016) Kleber Mendonça Filho’s films, and Bacurau (2019) Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles’s films, focusing on social inequality in Brazil. We pay special attention to the use of zoom as a technical-aesthetic element, especially in terms of narrative space and character (Brito, 1997; Gaudreault and Jost, 2009). It examines fictionalized urban spaces (Santos, 1996) based on views about the city experience (Peixoto, 2004) focusing on the way the social, which is external, is internalized in these films as suggested by Antonio Candido (2000), and bearing in mind Ella Shohat and Robert Stam’s warning that cinema does not refer directly to the “world”, but represents its languages and discourses (2006).
