- Abstract
This article addresses some problematic aspects implied in the representation of horror in audiovisual productions inspired by recent traumatic events, problematizing the relationship between memory and spectacle. The Chilean fiction series Mary & Mike (2018), based on real events, is analyzed according to notions of memory and violence. It examines the way in which State terrorism is drawn up in this production. In this regard, three central elements have been identified: 1. the idealization of the characters, 2. the eroticization of violence, and 3. an exaggerated asymmetry in masculine and feminine relations, as components from which a visual rhetoric is articulated. This articulation could be called an "aesthetic of cruelty" and exalts violence, revitalizing the narrated horror.
