- Abstract
Missionary linguistics does not mean an uncritical phase of linguistics, rather it must be acknowledged as one of the crucial domains in which brilliant intellectuals were contributing to the transformation of modern Western thought. In particular the members of the Society of Jesus developed rhetorical media into the strategy of inculturation, stressing the importance of the linguistic channel, in its aurol-oral and written aspects, and in the socio-psychological impact of the translation. At the same time, the attention towards data singled out from reality, as well as towards universal principles underlying that reality represent the active role Jesuits had in the debate about Empiricism and Rationalism.
