- Abstract
The role of soaps and detergents in hand eczema is controversial. Allergic contact dermatitis from synthetic detergents is rare but there are reports of allergic contact dermatitis from lauryl ether sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate and dodicin. Sulfosuccinates are derived from maleic acid. They are prepared by reacting a hydroxy-containing fatty compound with maleic anhydride to form a mono ester. The ester is then sulfonated by sodium sulfite. The mono-sulfosuccinates are widely used in personal care products because of their low irritancy.
