- Abstract
The article features the Roper Public Opinion Research Center, an international survey archive based at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The Center holds 6,000 sample surveys covering 12 million interview cards. Roughly half the surveys were conducted in the U.S., while the other half of the material is from other countries. Although some seventy nations are represented in the collection, a large majority of the studies come from North America, Western Europe, Australia and Japan. The entire collection of data is growing at an annual rate of approximately 15 percent. The mass storage hardware is provided by a 3488 device that will hold 340 million characters on line. Up to seven additional units of 340 million six-bit characters may be added on line to the system. For a typical survey of 2,000 respondents, that data can be read from a 3488 device and marginals computed on the order of five seconds. In addition to the 3488, the basic hardware will include a central processor unit, four-pack magnetic tape station, IBM-compatible tape station, card-reader punch and high-speed printer. The Roper Center hopes that its automated system will be instrumental in facilitating survey research.
