- Abstract
This article analyzes the occupational conditions and professional performance of economics graduates from the Economics program at the University of Nariño, Colombia. The results show the professional success of economists in their job placement, the reduced job search time, the moderate unemployment rate, the advances in postgraduate education, and the absence of labor discrimination. Additionally, it highlights the gender wage balance and the equitable distribution of income between women and men. It is mentioned that in 1993, the Occupational Conditions Program for economics graduates was created. The article also addresses the transformation of employment in the second half of the 19th century with the industrial revolution and the introduction of technological innovations. The article focuses on the concept of decent work and its strategic objectives. The four fundamental pillars of decent work according to Somavía are mentioned. Furthermore, the dimensions and conditions of decent work are presented, such as sufficient income, promotion of workers' rights, social security, and the level of unionization. The results of a study on the working conditions of economists from the University of Nariño in Colombia show that they do not meet the quality standards established by the ILO. It has also been observed that the quality of employment in the main Colombian cities is below the limit considered as "quality employment". On the other hand, the existence of discrimination in the labor market has been pointed out, especially in terms of wage and occupational discrimination against women. Regarding the salaries of economics graduates from the University of Nariño, it has been found that men earn 19.7% more than women and that income concentration is low. According to the data, there is a segregation of 19.52% in the public sector and 22.03% in the private sector. However, in terms of unemployment and occupational discrimination, the differences between men and women are minimal, indicating equal job opportunities between genders. A gender difference is observed in occupations, with more women employed in the private sector and more men in the public sector. Additionally, a minimal wage gap is identified, where women experience a reduction in salary compared to men. However, progress in postgraduate education is highlighted, with a significant percentage of economists having specialization, master's, and doctoral degrees. It is emphasized that women tend to specialize to a greater extent than men, and that a significant number of economists are dedicated to human capital formation. Furthermore, it is mentioned that there is no evidence of economic discrimination between men and women in terms of salary and working conditions. It is noted that the gender wage gap is minimal, and that postgraduate education, specifically a master's degree, increases women's salaries compared to men. It is also mentioned that age has a negative effect on the salary of both genders. The study also addresses the gender wage gap and presents the corresponding test results.
