- Abstract
Stem cells are classified into embryonic and adult, and have been applied, for example, in the analysis of human development, gene therapies and the production of specific strains for transplants. Therefore, there is an international trend to legalize ethically protocols and scientific studies using these cell types. Mainly because the results of these surveys reveal hopes of improving the quality of human life beings suffering from diseases that are so far considered incurable, or that lead to the end of life in a very fast and painful compared to other process. But linked to the prospects of cure are the discussions about ethical, moral and religious questions regarding the use of these cells. In this sense, the aim of this work was to verify the opinion and knowledge of some people in society on the use of embryonic stem cells in research and treatment of degenerative diseases. To this end, the participants of this study answered a questionnaire whose results revealed that the majority of respondents believes that research involving stem cells are inevitable, but also that this technology will bring benefits. They also suggest that frozen embryos in fertility clinics should have another destination beyond the research and treatment of degenerative diseases, such as donation for couples wishing to have children.
