Eyeless in Glasgow: James Kelman's Existential Milton.
- Authors
Hames, Scott
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented for the novel "How Late It Was, How Late" by James Kelman. It sees the book as a loose adaptation of the blank-verse play "Samson Agonistes" by John Milton. It discusses Kelman's exploration of narrative authority, linguistic freedom and aesthetic legitimacy, noting that both works concern conflicts between individualism and responsibility to others and self-mastery versus outside forces. It notes that literary political values are embedded within both texts.
