- Abstract
Earlier, the authors proposed a harmonic suppression device based on a new principle, and discussed its basic operating principle and steady-state characteristics [1]. The device consists of small-capacity series-active filter and an LC filter, and solves the difficulties of conventional LC filter and active filter simultaneously. The following problems occur for LC filters: (i) The compensation characteristics are affected by power source impedances. (ii) An antiresonance phenomenon occurs between the filter and power source. (iii) Harmonic currents flow into the filter from the upper-level system. On the other hand, with active filters the following problems occur: (i) The active filter comprises a large-capacity PWM converter with high current response speed and high accuracy. Therefore, the efficiency is low and the cost is high. (ii) It is difficulty to construct a large-capacity active filter [2-4]. The new type active filter proposed in this paper solves all the forementioned problems and it is suited for large-capacity thyristor rectifier circuits and transmission and distribution networks. The conventional LC filter is unable to suppress effectively the harmonics produced by cycloconverters because the harmonic frequencies produced by the load vary with time. This paper examines the applicability of the proposed filter to such loads and proposes a new control circuit for reducing the capacity of the series active filter. The validity of the analysis is demonstrated by simulation and experiments.
