- Abstract
The article evaluates the timing and extent of mortality of Harlequin ducks during the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska by using a population model. After the spill, it is estimated that Harlequin ducks decline by 25 percent. It is also estimated that the fecundity rates for the species will recover in 24 years. The results suggest that the effect of oil spill on wildlife can be expressed over longer time frames than previously assumed.
