- Abstract
In this paper, in memory of Géza Alföldy, we aim to display an interesting group of eleven funerary inscriptions. All of them have been discovered in a recent excavation in the ancient Cuartel Militar de Artillería "Hernán Cortés" (Merida, España). Nine of them are Roman epigraphs belonging to the most active period of epigraphical production in Augusta Emerita, that is between the middle of the AD 1st century and the 3rd century. They were made in the traditional shapes and materials: marble plaques and arae. Thanks to these records, the knowledge of the Emeritensis society has been increased, especially related to the poorest. At least nine of the thirteen names of people carved on these stones were slaves and freedmen. One of the slabs discovered stands out because of its exclusivity in comparison with the catalogue of inscriptions from Merida known until recently. It talks about a munitio cum maesolaeo (sic) addresed to a group of freedmen belonging to other freedmen.
