- Abstract
The military defeat of the Republic in western Andalusia, Extremadura, Avila and the northern regions of Toledo at the beginning of the Spanish civil war caused an unprecedented displacement of the population with Madrid as the main destination. From a saturated capital, beleaguered for months, thousands of these displaced were distributed in turn to the Mediterranean rearguard, especially during the first year and a half of conflict and mainly as a result of the evacuation campaigns of the Executive Board of Defense. With reference to the group of displaced and evacuated from Madrid to Alicante shipped between 1936 and 1937, we monitor the phenomenon of refugees, its implications, repercussions and aspects of daily life in some localities of the province Valencia.
